64 Hexagrams & Haiku: An exploration of the I Ching

Denise Weaver Ross is a visual artist and poet based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Known for her richly layered paintings that weave together mythology, symbolism, and personal experience, she explores the intersection of art, story, and spiritual practice. Her earlier series, The House of Cards, reimagined the traditional deck of playing cards through 56 large-scale works. Her book The House of Cards: The Whole Deck, paired each image with poem which she also wrote.In 64 Hexagrams & Haiku, Weaver Ross presents her 64 paintings with 64 haiku. This creative exploration arose out of her fascination with symbolic systems, blending the 64 hexagrams (combinations of six yin and yang lines) from the ancient Chinese I Ching or Book of Changes, with pattern, and metaphor to reveal moments of transformation and balance. Through this decade-long body of work, she invites viewers into a dialogue between intuition and intellect, chance and meaning, image and word.When she isn’t painting or writing, Weaver Ross creates large-scale public murals throughout Albuquerque and contributes actively to the regional arts community.
